How to Store a Fake Christmas Tree: 7 Tips from the Experts

A Christmas tree decorated with ornamentsDuring the holiday season, there’s nothing like sitting next to a beautifully decorated Christmas tree. But once the holidays are over, it is essential to correctly store your Christmas tree to keep it safe for the next holiday season. Find 7 Christmas tree storage tips from the experts below.

How to Store a Christmas Tree for Next Year

  1. Remove all decorations: First, remove all decorations from the Christmas tree. Carefully wrap all bulbs and place them into storage containers and boxes. If your tree is not pre-lit, remove the lights from the Christmas tree and wrap them up for storage.
  2. Inspect the lights: If your tree is pre-lit, it is important to inspect the lights before putting your tree back in storage. Start at the bottom of the tree near the plug and follow the line of lights all of the way up the tree. If you notice any burnt out bulbs, replace them.
  3. Dismantle the tree: After taking all of the decorations off of the tree, you are able to break the tree into pieces. Depending on the size of the tree, it may break into three or four pieces. It is important to keep in mind, though, that if the tree is pre-lit each section of the tree is likely plugged into the next. Remove the top of the Christmas tree and unplug it from the middle piece. Keep doing this until all of the pieces are broken apart.
  4. Fold the branches of the tree together: Next, fold the branches of the tree back together so it will easily fit in the box. When doing so, be careful not to damage the light bulbs.
  5. Use a tree storage bag: In order to keep your tree free from damage during storage, always utilize a tree storage bag. A tree storage bag will protect your tree from dust and dirt settling on it.
  6. Store your tree horizontal in storage: To conserve storage space, people often prop their Christmas tree up against a wall. If the tree falls, it can not only damage the lights and branches, but also any other items in the storage unit.
  7. Store your Christmas tree in temperature controlled location: Over time, drastic temperature swings can damage your Christmas tree. To keep it free from damage, never store it in locations that are prone to these temperature swings. For example, the basement, garage and attic are locations that can be susceptible to more drastic temperature swings.
