Climate-Controlled Storage in Pantego? Here’s Why You May Not Need It

It’s one of the first things you’ll see when comparing storage facilities: “Climate-Controlled Units Available.” Sounds like a must-have, right?

But do you really need it—or is it just something you’ve been told to look for?

At Store Here in Pantego, we don’t offer climate-controlled storage. So we’ve had hundreds of honest conversations with customers over the years about when it matters… and when it doesn’t.

This guide will walk you through:

  • What climate control actually does (and doesn’t do)
  • Which items genuinely require it
  • How to store safely in a standard unit—even in the Texas heat

What Is Climate-Controlled Storage, Exactly?

Climate-controlled storage units are designed to maintain a more consistent internal temperature—usually between 55°F and 85°F—regardless of outside weather. Some may also include humidity control.

The idea is to protect items that can be damaged by extreme heat, cold, or moisture. But here’s the thing: it’s not a universal solution. Not everything needs it—and for many common storage scenarios, it’s an unnecessary expense.

What Actually Needs Climate Control in Texas?

There’s no doubt North Texas gets hot—especially in summer. But unless you’re storing certain sensitive items, you may not need a climate-controlled unit at all.

You likely DO need climate control if you’re storing:

  • Electronics (TVs, computers, cameras)
  • Musical instruments
  • Vinyl records or old film
  • Paintings, photographs, or delicate art
  • Leather furniture or antiques

You likely DON’T need climate control for:

  • Mattresses, couches, and other basic furniture
  • Kitchenware, dishes, pots and pans
  • Books, clothing, and linens (when packed properly)
  • Seasonal decorations or sports gear
  • Business inventory in boxes or plastic bins

Bottom line: If you’re storing practical household goods or seasonal items, you can likely skip climate control—as long as you take a few extra packing steps.

How to Protect Belongings in a Non-Climate-Controlled Unit

Texas summers are no joke—but most damage comes not from the heat itself, but from how things are stored. Here’s how to prepare your items to handle it:

1. Use plastic containers instead of cardboard

Plastic bins keep moisture out and don’t collapse in humidity. They also help block pests better than boxes.

2. Elevate your items

Use pallets, plastic risers, or even milk crates to keep furniture and boxes off the floor. This improves airflow and guards against condensation.

3. Wrap delicate items carefully

For books, electronics, and fabrics, use bubble wrap, thermal blankets, or even shrink wrap. Add moisture absorbers like silica packets to sealed containers.

4. Check in periodically

We always recommend inspecting your unit every few weeks—especially during long-term storage. Quick visual checks go a long way in catching potential issues early.

Why So Many Customers Still Choose Standard Storage

We’ve seen plenty of customers pay for climate-controlled units elsewhere, only to find out months later that their items would’ve been fine in a standard unit—especially with smart packing and a little prep.

For example, many UT Arlington students use our storage during summer or study abroad—storing dorm furniture, clothes, and mini fridges with zero issues.

Likewise, weekenders storing RV and boat gear near Lake Arlington often prioritize convenience, space, and security over climate control—and our facility offers just that.

If you’re moving to Pantego or West Arlington and trying to figure out short-term storage options, you’re not alone—we work with new residents every week during transition season.

The Store Here Difference (When You Don’t Need Climate Control)

When climate control isn’t necessary, what matters most is how well the rest of the facility protects your stuff.

At our Pantego location, we focus on the things that make the biggest difference:

  • Secure, drive-up units with reinforced doors and clean concrete floors
  • Daily on-site staff—you’ll talk to a real person, not a call center
  • Quarterly pest control treatments to keep your unit protected
  • Gate keypad access and 24/7 surveillance coverage

And yes—we still throw in a free move-in truck for new renters.

Still Deciding?

We get it. Climate control is a smart option in some cases. But if you’re packing up a dorm room, organizing a seasonal garage clean-out, or just need a place to park your boxes during a move—chances are, a well-managed standard unit is all you need.

Got more questions? Not sure what size you need? Or better yet, stop by and see our units in person. You’ll talk to someone who actually works on-site—no 800-numbers, no pressure.
